Students who successfully complete the internship will receive a state need grant provided funds are available. Program Administration The SW Washington OIP is administered by the Southwest Washington Workforce Development Council (SWWDC) with funds from the State Workforce Board, Workforce Investment Act, and Department of Labor. SWWDC will administer the program in partnership with nConnect NW and the SW Washington STEM Coach, Educational Service District 112, and local school districts. Available Internships The OIP will focus on creating approximately 100 internships in the following targeted industries: manufacturing, including high tech; construction trades; health care; and transportation and logistics. Emphasis will be on those occupations within these industries that require the use of science, technology, engineering, and/or mathematics (STEM) with average annual wages of at least $30,000. Eligible Opportunity Internship Program Applicants Sophomores, juniors, and seniors from partner school districts who are at least 16 years of age and who qualify for the federal free and reduced lunch program and who are interested in pursuing a career in one of the targeted industries and who are working with SW Washingtons STEM Coach; or participating in another approved internship administered by the school districts. In addition, Workforce Investment Act (WIA) eligible juniors and seniors who are enrolled in Educational Service District 112s Youth Workforce Program and who are interested in pursuing a career in one of the targeted industries are eligible to participate in through that program. All applicants, regardless of program, will be required to complete an internship application. Internships are limited and application does not guarantee placement. Partner School Districts Partner school districts are those who have a signed OIP Agreement with nConnect NW and the SWWDC. Partner school districts will agree to: Serve as the educational institutional partner for the program. Identify, recruit, pre-screen, and refer eligible students. Provide required Instruction Learning Agreements. Facilitate the necessary arrangements to ensure participants receive work-based credit. Provide work readiness/professionalism support sessions in partnership with the STEM Coach to prepare participants for success in their internships. Liaison with the employer as necessary to comply with all relevant state work-based learning requirements. Work with the local community colleges to develop articulation agreements so that the students receive college credit. Participate in monthly project team meetings. Other Approved Internships SWWDC will work with partner schools to identify eligible students who are participating in existing district internship programs and determine whether these students and internships qualify the student to receive the State Need Grant. Such cases will be approved on a case-by-case basis by the SWWDC. State Need Grant Students can use the State Need Grant at public two- and four-year colleges and universities, and many accredited independent colleges, universities, and career schools in Washington. Funds can also be used for instruction, tools, and other program costs associated with an apprenticeship. The 2009-2010 award maximums vary from $2,690-$6,876 based on the institution to which the student applies. Visit HYPERLINK "http://www.hecb.wa.gov/paying/waaidprgm/sng.asp" http://www.hecb.wa.gov/paying/waaidprgm/sng.asp for more information. State Need Grant funds are limited and are awarded on a first-come first-served basis. Students who wish to receive the State Need Grant must complete a FASFA in accordance with grant application procedures. Students should submit this application as soon as possible to increase the likelihood that they will receive the grant. The SWWDC will provide its list of OIP participants and completers to the Workforce Board so that they can be identified in the grant award process. Students must use the award within one year of high school graduation. Program Timeline The program will run January 4, 2010 through October 31, 2010.
